My name is Jan Houtsma and I live in Hilversum, the Netherlands, which is about 15 miles from Amsterdam. I am married to Caroline and we have three kids Ramon, Tamara and Camilla. And now what you probably really came for....
In May i have travelled to Poland for Alcatel-Lucent. During the weekends i also had time to do some site seeing. On saturday i travelled to Oswiecim, better known as Auschwitz, the camp that
became the site of the greatest mass murder in the history of humanity, which was committed against the European Jews as part of Hitler's plan for the complete destruction of that people. For the photos i made in Warsaw and
Auschwitz please click here.
Currently i work for Alcatel-Lucent in Hilversum, which is about 2 miles from home. Just close enough to go by bike or on my skates every day if i have some time left. However after bringing the kids to school in the morning i usually take the car trying to get at work before my collegues leave home for dinner :-) For those interested, i have worked quite some time as a software developer for Bell Laboratories (which is part of Alcatel-Lucent). My main areas of expertice are SDH, the OSI protocol stack, CMISE, Add/Drop multiplexers and timing management (synchronization of the telecommunications network). If you don't understand a single bit of what this all means, it's all about very high speed transmission of voice and data via optical fibers. After working in software development for over 12 years, i left software development in 2001 to work more closely with customers for a customer support organization called Network Integration Services (NIS). For this group i now support external customers of Alcatel-Lucent who bought or will buy our equipment.
My hobbies are Biking, Squash and Inline Skating. At this moment bikeracing has my preference. I am a member of a bike club called "de Adelaar" ("the eagle") in Hilversum, the Netherlands. Almost every weekend we
tour around the country for at least 100 kilometers (about 60 miles), sometimes even 150 kilometers (100 miles) or more. And every wednesday is our training evening. Then we go around 70 kilometers (45 miles). Currently i have a
Koga Miyata - RoadWinner racing bike. Sometimes, on Friday Night i go skating in Amsterdam. We start in the Vondelpark at 8:30pm. To get an impression you can download
this FNS screensaver which i compiled from some photos. Or have a look on the following inline-skate websites which are loaded with pictures:
| Friday Night Skate Amsterdam | Skate fotos van Sylvester de Koster |
| Skate fotos van Jan Feijes | Het skate weer |
| De skate pagina | De skate newsgroup |
And then there is my virtual life on the internet. Although i hardly have time for this anymore you can occasionally find me in Melrose Place. A better way to contact
me quickly is via MSN or e-mail.
Oh yeah, almost forgot! i love to receive email!
